Current News, and Issues with Food
McDonald's has a Quality Check!
McDonald's has always not been known for high quality but recently the release of some information on their "pink slime" meat. This has us questioning the current FDA Standards and if they are strict enough. "pink slime" is mechanically separated meat (MSM) . This is a paste/batter like meat product. It is the leftover scraps of meat that are scraped of the bones of the chicken and include bones and other parts not meant for human consumption. To make this edible it is cleaned with ammonia-hydroxide and bacteria. Many websites say that they don't do this which is true. One website says McDonald's says its stopped using lean beef trimmings after 2011 and that it's nuggets are made of white boneless meat" so they have used it at some point. As mentioned in the second video other countries have higher standards and the video released is from Canada. Who knows what American Chicken McNuggets are like?
Soylent!?
What is soylent? Soylent is a replacement for food. Rob Rhinehart says to have created it in order to make a "simpler food source". Soylent was made to be a more efficient source of supplement, the' food of the future' as some are calling it. Soylent is a dry powder that you simply mix with water to create a healthy meal.
Benefits Soylent saves time, money and still manages to provide a healthy nutritional diet full of all needed supplements. Why spend time getting individual ingredients and preparing a meal when you can have a meal for many in minutes? "Spend less than $10 per day on food and less than $4 per meal." http://soylent.me/#/
Although Soylent isn't your regular food it still provides a wholesome diet providing all nutrients needed to function. |
The video to the right is an overview of Soylent narrated by the creator Rob Rhinehart.
|
FDA approval? Soylent received approval for its nutrition label in January 2014 by the Food and Drug Administration .The FDA classifies Soylent as food instead of supplement surprising many. Despite various opinions Soylent meets FDA standards and has been declared indeed healthier than your average meal and containing nutrients.

Eggs Made of Plant Proteins?
Hampton Creek Foods, a company in San Francisco, has taken on a towering goal. Their goal: to make eggs out of plant proteins.
Joshua Tetrick, CEO of Hampton Creek Foods, has explained the reasoning behind this project from a consumer's viewpoint. He explains, that although a consumer interested in the welfare of hens may choose to purchase only free-roam or cage-free eggs, the majority of eggs (one-third in the United States) are contained in food products. Examples of these products: cookies, muffins, salad dressings, and mayonnaise. However, Hampton Creek Foods has started slow, with a logic approach to the task. Instead of replicating each function of an egg all at the same time, they have decided to try to replicate how eggs function in specific consumer products. Eventually, they do hope to create a product that will serve every function as well as an egg. |
Good news: Although there are still perfections to be made, the company has developed and released a new vegan plant based egg product. It is called Beyond Eggs for cookies. Note, it is only able to serve function as an egg in cookies.
According to various taste tests, the Beyond Eggs has worked extremely well from the standpoint of consumers. Not only does it work well, to many, it works even better as a egg replacement than normal hen eggs. |
